A Day of Fun on the Greens to Raise Funds for Little Wings

St Johns Park Bowling Club greens were in full swing on Thursday 4 July 2019, when over 170 people from all walks of life came together to enjoy a friendly bowls competition and raise funds for the Little Wings Charity. Teams from various clubs including Smithfield RSL, Blacktown Workers, Wests Tigers, Club Liverpool, Cabra Vale Diggers, Canley Heights RSL, Club Mt Lewis, NBC Sports and Penrith Bowling Club, along with their suppliers and friends joined in the fun.

The Stan Anderson Memorial Charity Bowls Day is an initiative of ClubsNSW Western Metropolitan Region in honour of Stan Anderson, who was President of the Region for 19 years, and President of Smithfield RSL for 12 years. Now in its 7th year at St Johns Park Bowling Club, this annual charity event has raised over $120,000 with $32,000 raised on the day for Little Wings. Included in the total amount was a donation of $7,000 from the St Johns Park Women’s Bowling Club, which was matched by St Johns Park Bowling Club Group.

The Little Wings charity was established in 2012, starting with provision of a service for children undergoing cancer treatment at The Children’s Hospital Westmead. Little Wings has since grown its capacity to provide services to other seriously ill children across The Sydney Children’s Hospital Network and the John Hunter Children’s Hospital Newcastle.

Little Wings transports families with regular and ongoing medical appointments and take children home for short breaks during their treatment, so they can spend precious time with their family and friends. Little Wings help keep families together during one of the toughest times of their lives, with thanks to support and generosity of their community of supporters and partners.

The winning team of the day was industry supplier, IGT, who will have their name engraved on the trophy.

St Johns Park CEO, David Marsh, says that the event is a fun day rather than a day of serious bowls. “Everyone is welcome to play, it’s all about having a good time with friends while raising money for this worthwhile cause’. He said a great day was had by everyone who attended.
